Launch
Students will launch the radish investigation by examining contrasting controlled growing systems, generating initial questions about what counts as success, building foundational knowledge in plant biology, environmental variables, and digital data practices, and creating the first artifacts that will guide later method design, data collection, critique, and revision.
Days 1 - 6
Controlled Environment Challenge
Question & Method Plan
Students will refine a focused radish investigation question, build a fair and feasible comparison method, define measurable variables and data routines, create a shared spreadsheet system, test an automated monitoring idea, and improve their plans through peer critique, OSU Extension feedback, and a final method checkpoint before beginning full implementation.
Days 17 - 26
Build & Collect Evidence
Midpoint Data Check
Students will examine the quality of their midpoint radish investigation evidence, compare early patterns across soil, hydroponic, wick-based, and mica-radish farm trials, and strengthen their methods through critique, revision, and a mock exhibition. They will use spreadsheets, graphs, biology and chemistry reasoning, and community feedback to decide what data are trustworthy, what needs adjustment, and how their investigation should proceed.
Days 37 - 45
Analyze & Showcase Findings
Students will transform their radish trial records into defensible findings by cleaning and analyzing spreadsheet data, building statistical comparisons and graphs, interpreting anomalies through plant biology and chemistry, testing how automated routines supported evidence collection, and revising claims through peer and expert critique before the final exhibition phase.
Days 46 - 54
Showcase
Students will finalize and publicly present their mica-radish farm investigation findings, defend evidence-based conclusions about controlled growing systems, respond to peer, teacher, and community critique, and complete a structured reflection on what was good, bad, missing, confusing, and impactful for farming communities and future trials.
Days 55 - 60
