Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to harness the institutional knowledge of the "Summer Move Crew" to design and implement a sustainable training program for incoming junior interns at iPark87. By positioning these experienced seniors as Training Consultants, the initiative aims to ensure that new interns are equipped with essential technological skills and certifications through hands-on, collaborative projects. This real-world learning approach is strategically designed to build a cohesive, future-ready workforce that upholds the core values and design principles of iPark87.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this experience involve developing skills in Lean and Six Sigma principles, acquiring various certifications and expertise in advanced manufacturing technologies like 3D printing and laser cutting, and honing effective communication and collaboration competencies. Interns will engage in critical thinking and problem-solving scenarios in partnership with industry leaders, design a comprehensive digital training manual to ensure sustainable learning for future interns, and lead community facility tours to exhibit their knowledge and capabilities. These goals will be achieved through hands-on workshops, peer-led demonstrations, and reflective events to foster academic growth and socio-emotional development.

Products

Interns will design and develop a comprehensive digital training manual that incorporates multimedia elements, such as video guides and interactive modules, to educate junior interns on advanced manufacturing technologies at iPark87. Additionally, they will create hands-on training workshop plans complete with materials and templates to facilitate mastery of Lean and Six Sigma principles. The project will also produce a series of peer-led tutorial videos and practical demonstrations focusing on the use of 3D printers, laser cutters, and etchers to enhance safe and effective training experiences.

Launch

Begin the project with a dynamic "Industry Treasure Hunt" at Newlabs in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where interns explore cutting-edge technologies and gather insights from innovative spaces. Encourage collaborative discussions to distill findings and inspire ideas for their training projects. Ensure the experience stimulates interns' curiosity and makes them excited about the real-world impact of the work they are about to undertake.

Exhibition

Host an 'Industry Insight Day' where interns conduct guided tours of iPark87, showcasing the facility and technology skills such as NC3 certifications and Lean training to community partners. Follow the tours with a Q&A session for interactive learning and mutual exchange. Organize a celebration involving families, industry partners, and the school community to honor the interns' achievements and reflect on their shared learning journey.
