Students will launch the pantry investigation by analyzing mystery clues, estimating and testing division strategies, and then building a shared understanding of how rates, decimals, fractions, and models can help answer fair-sharing questions for a community food pantry.
Days 1 - 2
Collect Share Evidence
Collect Share Evidence
Students will gather and organize pantry-sharing evidence, compute and document whole-number, decimal, and fraction quotients with chosen models, test the credibility of their methods through peer critique and a midpoint checkpoint, and revise their records so their later conclusions are based on clear, traceable mathematical evidence.
Days 9 - 13
Analyze Share Decisions
Analyze Share Decisions
Students will analyze pantry investigation evidence, compare strategies across whole-number, decimal, and fraction division, identify patterns and anomalies, revise explanations through peer critique, and prepare evidence-based conclusions for their pantry planning board and math museum display.
Days 14 - 18
Showcase
Showcase
Students will present their final pantry investigation products to an authentic audience, defend their mathematical decisions with clear models and evidence, gather audience and peer feedback, and document how their understanding of division, fractions, decimals, rates, and fair sharing changed across the project.
