# What teachers do
1 Welcome students to the Division Detective launch, introduce the food pantry context, and post the two essential questions where everyone can see them. Model the routine for each station: estimate first, choose a tool second, and explain why the model fits the clue. (5 min)
2 Teach the station roles and materials quickly: reader, estimator, recorder, and reporter. Show sentence starters and the strategy choices—ratio table, open array, or division notation—using one short sample clue so students know how to record a quick solution path on chart paper. (5 min)
3 Students rotate to Station 1 and solve a whole-number pantry clue using estimation and a selected model. Groups record their estimate, solution path, and one reason their strategy makes sense for the situation. (8 min)
4 Students rotate to Station 2 and solve a decimal pantry clue connected to package amounts or inventory data. Groups use place-value reasoning and explain how they know the quotient is reasonable before moving on. (8 min)
5 Students rotate to Station 3 and solve a fraction-sharing clue involving a unit fraction and a whole number or a whole number divided by a unit fraction. Groups use words, a sketch, or an equation to show the fair-share meaning of the problem. (8 min)
6 Students complete a quick gallery walk of the station charts, noticing how different groups chose different tools for different clues. Facilitate a short whole-class reveal in which students name patterns they noticed about division, rates, fractions, decimals, and fair sharing in the pantry context. (5 min)
7 Show or read the short food pantry partner note or video and connect the station work to the larger unit investigation. Students then write a brief notebook caption that includes one model, the strategy name, and how it helped compare quantities or make a fair decision. (6 min)
Preparation (10 items)
  • Prepare 3 pantry-themed mystery stations with clearly labeled clue cards: one whole-number division set, one decimal division set, and one fraction-division/fair-sharing set aligned to the listed standards.
  • Create or gather realistic materials for each station, such as package labels, inventory cards, family-size package data, and distribution numbers connected to the food pantry context.
  • Place chart paper and markers at each station with a simple recording frame: estimate, tool chosen, quick solution path, and why this model fits.
  • Prepare visual strategy supports for ratio table, open array, division notation, and partial quotients so students can reference them during rotations.
  • Write and post the essential questions and a short list of student-friendly vocabulary with brief definitions, including quotient, rate, ratio, estimate, and fair share.
  • Create group role cards for reader, estimator, recorder, and reporter to support collaboration and smooth transitions.
  • Prepare sentence starters for discussion and reflection, such as "We chose ___ because..." and "Our estimate was reasonable because..." and "This model helped us compare quantities by...".
  • Review all clue cards for reading load and prepare supports such as highlighted numbers, picture cues, or read-aloud options for students who need them.
  • Queue the food pantry partner note or short video and test audio/visual equipment before class.
  • Set a visible timer and map the rotation order so groups know when and where to move.
Student-facing instructions
You will work with your group as math detectives to solve pantry mystery clues. At each station, you will first make an estimate, then choose the tool that fits best—ratio table, open array, or division notation—to show your thinking on chart paper. You will use clue cards, package labels, inventory cards, markers, and your math notebook. Your task is to explain how your group solved each problem and why your strategy made sense for the pantry situation. At the end, you will look at other groups' work, listen to the pantry partner message, and write a short notebook caption that names one model you used and how it helped you make sense of a fair-sharing or comparison problem.
