Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse students in the dynamics of a product market, enabling them to understand the interconnected roles of farmers, stores, and customers in food distribution. By engaging in hands-on activities and collaboration with community partners, students gain insights into the importance of equitable food access and the potential for local solutions. This project not only fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills but also reinforces the value of community contributions in addressing real-world challenges related to healthy food availability.

Learning goals

Students will understand the roles and interactions of stakeholders in the food market, including farmers, stores, and customers. They will analyze the food supply chain from farm to table, recognizing the significance of each stage in promoting access to healthy food. Additionally, students will differentiate between wants and needs, explore pricing and resource distribution, and identify opportunities for local food access improvements through community engagement and collaborative projects.
Standards
  • [Wisconsin] SCI.2.SEP.1 - Students ask questions and define problems, in conjunction with using crosscutting concepts and disciplinary core ideas, to make sense of phenomena and solve problems.
  • [Wisconsin] SS.Econ1.a.1 - Differentiate between a “want” and a “need”. Describe resources that are important or useful to you, your family, community, and country.
  • [Wisconsin] SS.Econ2.b.2 - Define product market and categorize prices of products in a local market.
Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.

Products

Throughout this learning experience, students will collaboratively create a visual map of the food supply chain, capturing each step from farm to table and highlighting key roles. As a culminating product, they will host a student-led panel discussion at the 'Food Chain Celebration,' where they will present innovative proposals to improve access to healthy foods, informed by their hands-on activities and community partner insights. Additionally, students will develop creative journals reflecting their journey and insights throughout the project, which may include drawings, diagrams, and written reflections.

Launch

Begin the project with a dynamic 'Seed-to-Plate Expedition.' Start by having students plant seeds in a small garden, fostering an understanding of growth. Follow this with a visit to a local grocery store, providing insights into food distribution. Wrap up the day by encouraging students to creatively document their experiences, observations, and initial thoughts in a reflection journal.

Exhibition

Students will host a dynamic 'Food Chain Celebration' where they showcase their understanding through a timeline they designed, illustrating the journey from farm to store to table. Guests, including community partners, will explore interactive exhibits and booths featuring students' innovative proposals for improving local food access. The event will culminate in a student-led panel discussion where students present insights gained during the project and engage in Q&A sessions, inviting the community to join in collaborative conversations on food distribution and advocacy.
