Purpose

This project aims to immerse second-grade students in a hands-on exploration of how diet and exercise influence the human body, fostering their ability to make informed, health-conscious decisions. By engaging with community partners, participating in interactive activities, and collaboratively creating projects, students will develop critical thinking and communication skills while fostering a deeper understanding of nutrition and wellness. Through creative tasks and reflection, students will enhance their problem-solving abilities and embody the core competencies, ultimately contributing to their overall well-being and active participation in a health-aware community.

Learning goals

Students will explore how nutrition and exercise impact their health through hands-on activities and community partnerships. They will learn to create balanced meal plans, understand how different foods affect the body, and discover fun ways to incorporate daily physical activities. By engaging with their peers and community experts, students will develop critical thinking skills and communicate their learnings effectively, culminating in presentations at events like a healthy food fair and Fitness Fest.

Competencies
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.

Products

Students will create educational videos demonstrating exercises, showcasing their understanding and sharing health benefits at the 'Fitness Fest.' They will design a cookbook filled with their healthy meal recipes, complete with colorful illustrations and nutritional explanations. Additionally, they will collaborate on a mural depicting the relationship between the human body, nutrition, and exercise, incorporating personal reflections on health impacts. These final products will serve as educational resources for the broader school community.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience by hosting a vibrant 'Food Detective Day' where students don detective hats and engage in an energetic scavenger hunt throughout the school, examining food labels to uncover hidden nutritional facts with beginner-level guidance. This activity will seamlessly transition into a hands-on 'Nutrition Lab Experiments' day, where small groups will rotate through stations to perform interactive experiments, such as testing food reactions to preservatives and arranging a colorful rainbow of healthy ingredients. These engaging activities set the stage for a comprehensive exploration of how food and exercise impact our bodies, instantly grabbing students' curiosity and preparing them for deeper inquiry.

Exhibition

In a vibrant 'Fitness Fest,' students will invite school community members to join interactive exercise demonstrations, showcasing the positive impacts of physical activity on health. Additionally, a 'Nutritious Art Gallery' will display student-created artworks of their balanced meal plans, inviting attendees to explore their colorful creations while students articulate the nutritional benefits. These exhibitions will provide dynamic platforms to share student insights and promote health awareness.
