Using their graphs, students circle patterns in one color (e.g., “higher after exercise”) and star surprises in another (e.g., “one person’s energy stayed the same”). Teacher models sentence frames: “I notice…,” “Most of the time…,” “One result that does not fit….” Students record or dictate at least two pattern statements in their notebooks.
