Question
Students will experience a real biking phenomenon, generate authentic wonderings, and refine them into focused, investigable research questions with clear hypotheses that will guide their multi-week investigation of how biking affects the body.
Days 1 - 3
Design
Students will design a systematic investigation plan that clearly explains how they will answer their biking body systems research question, identify and control variables, create a detailed data collection procedure, and revise their methodology based on peer feedback before beginning data collection.
Days 4 - 7
Collect
Students will systematically collect and document heart rate and breathing data during biking trials, conduct quality checks on their methods, and ensure their raw data is complete, accurate, and ready for analysis.
Days 8 - 11
Analyze
Students will interpret their heart rate and breathing data from biking investigations by creating clear visualizations, identifying patterns and anomalies, engaging in structured peer critique, and developing evidence-based preliminary findings that connect directly to their original research questions and hypotheses.
Days 12 - 16
Conclude
Students will draw evidence-based conclusions about how biking affects the heart, lungs, and muscles; explicitly acknowledge limitations in their investigations; generate new research questions; and present their full investigation process to an authentic audience at the Biking Science Fair and Heart and Wheels Festival.
