Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to deepen students' understanding of the three branches of government and their roles in everyday life. Through hands-on activities and collaborative projects, students will connect government functions to their personal experiences and community. This approach encourages critical thinking, effective communication, and reflection, fostering a sense of belonging and identity in the civic context.

Learning goals

Students will understand the roles and functions of the three branches of government and their impact on daily life. They will develop critical thinking skills by exploring how local government addresses community needs. Through creating and presenting their work, students will practice effective communication and reflect on their learning. Additionally, students will establish a sense of identity and belonging by connecting government functions to their own experiences and community.

  • [California] 3.4.4 - Understand the three branches of government, with an emphasis on local government.
Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a mural that visually represents the functions of the three branches of government, with each student contributing a piece that connects to their everyday experiences. Additionally, students will design individual posters or infographics illustrating how each government branch impacts daily life, which will be displayed during the Government Gallery Gala. These products will showcase students' understanding of local government and its relevance to their community.

Launch

Begin with an interactive role-play where students simulate a town hall meeting, taking on roles as members of the local government and community. Encourage them to discuss a local issue, such as building a new playground, highlighting how each government branch contributes to decision-making. This activity will spark curiosity and set the stage for exploring how government functions impact their daily lives.

Exhibition

Organize a 'Government Gallery Gala' where students showcase their collaborative mural and individual posters or infographics. Invite parents and other classes to walk through the gallery, allowing students to explain how each government branch impacts their daily lives. Encourage students to engage visitors by discussing their personal contributions to the mural and the significance of government roles in their community.
