Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to enable students to understand and apply the concept of time intervals in real-world contexts, specifically through the lens of baking. By engaging in hands-on activities and collaborating with a local bakery, students will develop practical skills in calculating and managing time. This project aims to foster critical thinking and problem-solving abilities while highlighting the importance of timing in everyday activities.

Learning goals

Students will learn to tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure elapsed time intervals in minutes. They will solve word problems involving the addition and subtraction of time intervals within and across the hour. Through hands-on activities and real-world applications, students will understand the importance of timing in everyday tasks, such as baking. They will develop skills in planning and scheduling by calculating time intervals for recipes and daily activities.

Standards
  • [Kentucky] KY.3.MD.1 - Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure elapsed time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals within and across the hour in minutes.

Products

Students will create paper clocks to simulate time intervals and a digital presentation featuring time-lapse videos of baking processes. They will produce reflective journals detailing their observations and calculations of time intervals in baking. Additionally, students will develop a simple recipe, calculating preparation and baking times, and present their findings in the Clockwork Creations Gallery.

Launch

Begin with the "Time Tinker Workshop," where students create their own paper clocks. Facilitate a hands-on activity where they use these clocks to simulate planning a day at a bakery, focusing on scheduling tasks like mixing, baking, and cooling. Encourage students to think about how precise timing impacts each step and the overall success of the baking process.

Exhibition

Organize a "Clockwork Creations Gallery" event where students display their baking-themed artworks and time interval journals. Invite parents and community members to explore the gallery and engage with students about how timing impacts daily activities, particularly in baking. Enhance the exhibition with digital presentations featuring time-lapse videos of baking processes, annotated with calculated time intervals to showcase the students' understanding of time management.
