Empathize
Empathize
Students will investigate how real viewers experience color, recycled materials, and assemblage art by conducting interviews and creating empathy maps grounded in direct quotes. They will surface assumptions, practice active listening, and document user insights that will guide their personal shadow-box sculpture designs.
Day 1
Define
Define
Students will synthesize their user interview data and empathy maps into clear, evidence-based problem statements that define a focused design challenge for their individual assemblage sculptures and future team installation. They will identify patterns across users, draft and critique "How Might We" questions, and justify their design direction using direct quotes and insights.
Day 2
Ideate
Ideate
Students will generate a wide range of Louise Nevelson-inspired assemblage concepts grounded in real user insights, then narrow their ideas using evidence-based decision tools to select 2–3 strong concepts for prototyping. Teams will ensure every design choice connects directly to user quotes, emotional responses to color, and themes of environmental conservation.
Day 3
Prototype
Prototype
Students will build, test, and revise low- and mid-fidelity prototypes of their Louise Nevelson-inspired assemblage sculptures and team installation panels, using real user feedback to strengthen composition, color impact, and environmental storytelling before final production.
Day 4
Test/Present
Test/Present
Students will conduct a final validation of their Louise Nevelson-inspired assemblage installation with a new audience member, refine their presentation narrative to clearly trace user research to design decisions, and publicly present their collaborative sculpture and design journey at the Recycled Art Fair and Sculpture Under the Stars event.
