Purpose

This project aims to foster creativity, critical thinking, and environmental consciousness in middle school students by engaging them in the creation of Louise Nevelson-inspired assemblage sculptures. Through collaborative design, effective communication, and a deep exploration of found objects, students will express their individual and collective narratives while addressing themes of sustainability. The hands-on experience and various reflective opportunities will help students connect with art emotionally and intellectually, encouraging them to see everyday objects in new ways and consider their impact on the world around them.

Learning goals

The learning goals of this experience include fostering collaboration among students as they co-design their assemblage sculptures, encouraging shared decision-making and leadership roles. Students will enhance effective communication skills by listening to understand narrative perspectives and sharing their art through reflective exhibitions. Additionally, students will explore the transformation of everyday objects into art, understanding color's emotional impact, while considering the role of recycled materials in artistic interpretation and environmental conservation. They will develop critical thinking and self-awareness by documenting their artistic journey, analyzing color choices, and reflecting on the narratives embedded within their sculptures.

Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Students will craft individual assemblage sculptures that reflect their personal narratives and perspectives on environmental conservation. Each piece will showcase a thoughtful selection of found objects arranged in a cardboard shadow box, painted a single color to emphasize unity and emotion. The project will culminate in a 'Sculpture Under the Stars' event, where students will exhibit their creations, inviting the community to engage with the artworks and the stories they tell. Through this experience, students will also develop a digital portfolio highlighting their artistic journey and reflections.

Launch

Begin the project with an 'Art from Anywhere Challenge', providing each student with a mix of random everyday items like bottle caps and fabric scraps. Task them with crafting a quick mini-assemblage, encouraging spontaneous creativity and discussion about their choices. This activity sets the tone for exploring found objects as meaningful components of artistic expression and initiates the peer-collaboration process critical to the project's success.

Exhibition

Plan a dynamic 'Recycled Art Fair' where students transform the classroom into an interactive gallery space. Allow attendees to engage with the art through tactile stations and dialogue with young docents. Enhance the experience with a 'Stories from Objects' performance, where students vividly share the narratives inspired by their assemblage sculptures. Additionally, complement the fair with a 'Sculpture Under the Stars' evening event outdoors, using ambient lighting to highlight the intricate details of the artworks, inviting families and the community to experience the collective creativity.
