Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse 8th-grade students in the practical application of mathematical concepts by designing functional and aesthetically pleasing products for Haworth Furniture. Through engaging in collaborative design and critique sessions, students will deepen their understanding of geometry while honing critical communication and problem-solving skills. By integrating real-world feedback and self-reflection, learners will develop valuable competencies and experience personal growth, preparing them for future challenges in both academic and professional settings.

Learning goals

Students will understand and apply volume and surface area formulas to creatively design a functional product such as a lamp, desk organizer, or art piece for Haworth Furniture. They will engage in collaborative design processes, incorporating peer feedback and expert critique to refine their projects. By reflecting on their learning and decision-making, students will develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts while honing critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills.

Products

Students will design and construct functional and aesthetically pleasing lamps, desk organizers, or art pieces using geometric shapes, specifically cones, cylinders, and spheres. These projects will emphasize maximizing volume for utility while minimizing surface area to keep costs efficient for production. By engaging with real-world constraints, students will produce prototypes that blend mathematical accuracy with design innovation, ready for presentation at the class expo and subsequent feedback sessions with Haworth Furniture representatives.

Launch

To kick off the project, organize a 'Geometry in Design' hands-on challenge. Students will work in teams to quickly prototype a mini model using simple materials, such as paper, cardboard, and clay, focusing on exploring shapes and measurements related to cones, cylinders, and spheres. This activity will stimulate creativity, introduce essential concepts, and set the stage for deeper exploration into practical applications within furniture design.

Exhibition

The culmination of the project will be a "Student Expo," where students proudly display their innovative lamp, desk organizer, or art piece for Haworth Furniture. The exhibition will be interactive, inviting other classes to view, discuss, and vote on their favorite designs based on creativity, practicality, and use of mathematical concepts. This public presentation empowers students to communicate their learning journey and design choices effectively while engaging with feedback from peers and visitors.
