Launch
Students will launch the aquarium engineering challenge by analyzing a pet store scenario, comparing sample tank models for water capacity and material use, and sketching an initial evidence-based tank idea that names key criteria and constraints for later design work.
Day 1
Concept Selection
Students will research aquarium requirements, compare multiple rectangular prism tank concepts with volume and surface area calculations, and use a weighted decision matrix plus peer and teacher feedback to finalize a measurable design brief ready for prototyping.
Days 2 - 3
Prototype & Optimize
Students will build and test aquarium prototypes against their design criteria, use volume and surface area evidence to revise dimensions and material choices, and document an engineering story that prepares them for the final showcase.
Days 4 - 5
Showcase
Students will present their final aquarium designs to an authentic audience, explain how volume and surface area evidence guided their choices, respond to questions about trade-offs and revisions, and complete a brief reflection on their mathematical and collaborative learning.
Day 6
