  • Prepare and test a short pet store aquarium order scenario video, slide, or read-aloud that clearly includes needs related to water capacity, fish space, and material use.
  • Gather 2-3 rectangular prism aquarium models or paper nets with visibly different dimensions so students can compare likely volume and material use.
  • Label each model or net with dimensions or provide dimension cards that teams can reference during discussion and sketching.
  • Set up team supply bins with notebooks, pencils, rulers, and colored pencils or markers for first-draft sketches.
  • Create a recording space in the Aquarium Design Notebook or on a handout for criterion, constraint, trade-off, and first-draft sketch notes.
  • Prepare the two essential questions where all students can see them during the lesson.
  • Create an exit ticket prompt asking for one design change and one math idea that would guide that change.
  • Arrange tables so teams can easily examine models, talk, and participate in a short end-of-class share-out.
Student-facing instructions
You will work with your team to launch the Fish Home Challenge by studying a pet store aquarium order and comparing sample tank models or paper nets. First, watch or listen to the scenario and pay attention to what the fish need, how much water the tank should hold, and why material use matters. Then, examine the sample rectangular prism tanks with your team. Use the models, dimensions, and faces to estimate which design holds more water and which design may use less material. In your Aquarium Design Notebook, record one measurable criterion your design must meet, one constraint you need to work within, and one trade-off you notice. Next, make a first-draft sketch of a rectangular prism aquarium with labeled dimensions and a short note explaining why you think your design is a good starting point. You will need your notebook, pencil, ruler, and the sample models or nets. At the end, you will share one design idea with the class and complete an exit ticket naming one design change you would make and one math idea that would guide that change. The goal is to begin an evidence-based aquarium design that connects tank dimensions to water capacity and material efficiency.
