The Challenge

Access to clean water is a critical global issue, impacting health, education, and economic development. Inadequate sanitation and contaminated water supplies lead to widespread waterborne diseases, particularly in densely populated urban areas like Mumbai, India.
Challenge Question
How can we design and create a portable water purification device that effectively addresses the water contamination challenges faced by communities in Mumbai, ensuring access to clean and safe water?
Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] MS-PS3-1 - Construct and interpret graphical displays of data to describe the relationships of kinetic energy to the mass of an object and to the speed of an object.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Learning Partners and Clients

Students will collaborate with environmental scientists from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay to deepen their understanding of water purification techniques. They will also engage with WaterAid India, an NGO dedicated to improving water access and sanitation, to gain insights and data for their projects. Presentations will be made to the Bombay Municipal Corporation to propose innovative solutions for water purification in Mumbai, addressing real-world challenges faced by local communities.
