Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage students in understanding the concept of time and its significance in daily life through hands-on activities and community interactions. By creating clocks and exploring historical time measurement, students will develop practical skills in telling time to the hour and half-hour. This project aims to foster a deeper appreciation of time management and its impact on their routines and responsibilities.

Learning goals

Students will learn to read and set time to the hour and half-hour using both analog and digital clocks. They will understand the significance of time in organizing daily activities and historical contexts. Through creative projects, students will develop skills in collaboration, self-reflection, and communication, while engaging with community resources to deepen their understanding of time's role in society.
Standards
  • [Kentucky] KY.1.MD.3 - Assign values to time and money.

Products

Students will create paper plate clocks to practice setting and reading time to the hour and half-hour. They will develop a 'Time Adventure Map' that charts their daily activities, marking specific times and reflecting on their importance. Additionally, students will collaboratively create a 'Time Mural' illustrating different activities at specific times of the day. These products will be showcased during the exhibition, allowing students to share their understanding of time and its role in their lives.

Launch

Begin with the "Clock Craft Carnival," where students create their own clocks using paper plates and craft materials. Guide them in setting the clocks to specific times, introducing the concepts of hours and half-hours through interactive play. Encourage students to engage with each other by sharing their clocks and discussing how they might use them in daily activities.

Exhibition

Arrange a gallery walk titled 'Hour of Discovery' where students display their 'Time Murals' and reflection journals. Invite families and community members to explore the exhibits, with students guiding them through their learning journey. Encourage students to discuss how time influences their daily lives and showcase their 'Time Adventure Maps' as part of the exhibition.
