Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse middle school students in the rich cultural tapestry of Arab American heritage through the exploration and creation of art. By engaging in hands-on projects, students will develop an understanding of identity and cultural history, illustrated through traditional geometric patterns, architectural influences, and personal stories of Arab American artists. This week-long exploration fosters collaboration, critical thinking, and effective communication skills as students work together, reflect on diverse perspectives, and express cultural narratives artistically.

Learning goals

Students will explore and interpret cultural narratives by creating art inspired by traditional Arab motifs, which reinforces group identity and collaboration. They will research the work of Arab American artists, analyze cultural symbols in art, and apply watercolor resist techniques to understand the significance of architectural heritage. Through activities such as creating geometric patterns and designing lanterns, students will enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving skills while reflecting on cultural storytelling. Participation in peer discussions, exhibitions, and reflective journaling will develop effective communication as students share insights and explore diverse cultural perspectives.

Products

Students will collaboratively create an interactive mosaic mural showcasing geometric patterns that narrate the Arab American heritage story, with each piece crafted daily by different groups. They will design and compile an artistic book featuring their interpretations of Arab architecture intertwined with cultural essays for a school library exhibition. Additionally, students will construct traditional lanterns integrated with geometric designs for a captivating light installation event, accompanied by a digital gallery where these artworks come alive with audio stories, encouraging family and community engagement.

Launch

Initiate the experience with a 'Mosaic of Heritage' activity, where each student contributes to a collective mural by creating a unique geometric pattern inspired by Arab architecture. As students add their pieces, facilitate an open dialogue where they narrate the cultural stories and influences behind their designs. This shared creative process sets the stage for a week-long exploration of how art reflects and reinforces heritage and identity.

Exhibition

Transform the school into a vibrant gallery space by hosting "Art Across Arab America," where students' projects, including interactive mosaic murals and traditional lantern installations, are displayed alongside biographical sketches of Arab American artists. Invite family, community members, and local artists to engage with the students' creations and stories in an evening event, complete with cultural music and traditional refreshments. Additionally, curate a digital gallery version to extend the exhibition beyond school walls, inviting virtual visitors to experience the diverse artistic expressions and cultural stories.
