Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is for middle school students to explore the emotional power of color and form through hands-on watercolor painting projects inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe. By delving into the intricate details of succulents, students will develop their artistic skills, understand the influence of perspective, and express personal narratives through their artwork. This project promotes deeper understanding by integrating creative expression with historical and contextual insights, leading students to discover and articulate their perspectives on natural beauty and artistic storytelling.

Learning goals

Students will delve into color theory and watercolor techniques to express emotion, taking inspiration from Georgia O’Keeffe's artistic style. They will engage in observational sketching, using viewfinders to capture succulent details accurately, emphasizing perspective and proportion. Learners will develop storytelling skills, crafting narratives for their compositions that convey themes through close-up views, while enriching their socio-emotional understanding by reflecting on their artistic processes. Additionally, they will refine technical skills such as stippling and texture enhancement, adding depth to their paintings, and learn about the historical context of O’Keeffe’s work, translating this knowledge into personal art expressions.

Products

Students will collaboratively contribute to a collective succulent watercolor mural, creating an interconnected visual tapestry that reflects their individual artistic expressions inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe. They will also develop an augmented reality experience, allowing viewers to explore digital overlays on the paintings, which highlight detailed textures and color transitions, enhancing the overall appreciation of their work. Additionally, the project will culminate in an interactive projection mapping show, where animated sequences of their paintings emphasize the transitions and emotional narratives, offering a dynamic presentation of their creative journey.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Succulent Safari' field trip to a botanical garden, where students closely examine various succulents using viewfinders to sketch their intricate details. Encourage each student to capture unique features and perspectives, which they will later transform into watercolor paintings. This immersive experience sets the stage for exploring color, form, and emotional expression, sparking creativity and fostering a deeper connection to the project's themes inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe.

Exhibition

Present a living art installation named 'Blooming Perspectives,' where paintings are grouped and hung among real succulents to enhance the thematic contrast. Invite visitors to leave feedback and emotional responses on sticky notes that become part of the installation. This interactive exhibit will allow parents, peers, and local artists to engage with each student's journey, interpreting their emotional narratives and artistic techniques. Organize guided tours for attendees, led by the students, highlighting individual contributions and unique interpretations of Georgia O'Keeffe's influence.
