Purpose

This project provides middle school students with opportunities to engage in real-world exploration of local power and energy systems. Through hands-on activities and collaboration with community partners, students will delve into the processes of energy generation and storage, examining both the environmental impact and engineering principles involved. By designing models and hosting public exhibitions, learners will not only deepen their content knowledge but also refine critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills, fostering a comprehensive understanding of sustainable energy practices and their community implications.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this project are for students to understand how local power and energy storage facilities operate and impact their community and environment. Students will acquire critical thinking skills by exploring energy generation and storage processes, analyzing environmental effects, and proposing innovative solutions. They will enhance their communication abilities by presenting findings, participating in peer evaluations, and engaging with community partners. Additionally, students will gain content expertise in energy systems through hands-on model-building and direct interaction with industry professionals.
Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] PS.3.D - Energy in Chemical Processes and Everyday Life
Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Students will collaboratively design and fabricate a working scale model of a wind turbine using recycled materials, showcasing their understanding of renewable energy. Additionally, they will create detailed dioramas of local energy plants, complete with labeled components and interactive elements. Informational posters focusing on the environmental impacts of energy facilities will be crafted to engage community attendees during the exhibition. Each student will document their research findings and reflections in a comprehensive project portfolio, featuring insights into the operation and sustainability of local power facilities.

Launch

Begin the project with an "Energy Discovery Day," where students engage in hands-on activities by assembling simple circuits and powering mini devices using renewable materials. Invite a visiting engineer to guide students through the creation process, sparking curiosity and excitement about energy systems. This interactive start will help establish foundational understanding and enthusiasm for the week's exploration of local power and energy storage facilities.

Exhibition

Students will showcase their scale models and simulations in the 'Power Connection Expo,' inviting teachers, families, and community members to explore interactive stations demonstrating energy processes. They will host a 'Sustainability Showcase,' educating the local community with presentations and informational booths on sustainable energy practices and local facility impact. A 'Green Innovations Fair' will feature student-led proposals and live demonstrations of renewable energy models, engaging local stakeholders with insightful presentations.
