Empathize
Students will explore the meaning of fairness by stepping into the role of detectives, listening to real stories, and gathering empathy evidence from community members. Through hands-on investigation, discussion, and drawing-based research, they will begin to understand how unfair laws affect people and how change starts with understanding others’ experiences.

Define
Students will synthesize empathy research from interviews and reading sessions to define a clear, child-friendly problem statement about an unfair rule. They will identify who is affected, what makes the rule unfair, and why change is needed, using visual tools and collaborative discussion to prepare for ideation.

Ideate
Students will generate and refine multiple creative ideas for changing unfair rules by brainstorming, sketching, role-playing, and gathering peer feedback. They will connect their ideas to real people’s needs, compare options, and select strong solutions to prototype in the next phase.
Days 7 - 10
No activities have been added to this phase yet.
Prototype
Students will build and revise testable prototypes of their mural panels, puppet shows, and timeline boards using feedback from peers and real users (families and library partners). They will focus on making the difference between unfair and fair laws clear, showing cause-and-effect, and improving communication before final testing in Phase 5.
Days 11 - 15
No activities have been added to this phase yet.
Test/Present
Students will test their mural panels, puppet shows, and Fairness Change-Maker Timeline Boards with authentic users, gather feedback from library partners and families, revise their work, and present at the Unfair to Fair Transformation Exhibit. They will demonstrate understanding of what makes a rule fair or unfair and how people have changed laws over time.
