Purpose

The project aims to help second-grade students understand the concept of fairness in laws and rules by engaging them in interactive activities that highlight historical changes in social justice. Through hands-on experiences and community engagement, students explore how individuals have shaped fair laws, empowering them with the ability to identify and discuss fairness in their daily lives. The project fosters critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration, encouraging students to connect historical lessons with personal experiences, ultimately gaining deeper insights into fairness and justice.

Learning goals

Students will develop an understanding of fairness through exploring historical events and societal changes in laws. They will enhance their critical thinking skills by questioning and analyzing what makes rules fair or unfair and how people have transformed such norms. By collaborating on creative projects like murals and tableaus, students will gain an appreciation for social justice movements. Reflecting on personal experiences in class journals and participating in library partnerships will deepen their connection to historical figures and the impact of active citizenry in changing laws. Through assessments like visual timelines, students will acquire knowledge about key events and influential figures that shaped equitable laws.

Products

Students will craft individual visual timelines that illustrate the journey of a historical figure who altered unfair laws, showcasing their understanding of pivotal events. The class will collaboratively design a mural which depicts the evolution of laws, representing a visual synthesis of their learning process. Additionally, students will prepare performances, such as tableaus or puppet shows, based on historical events tied to social justice movements, offering an engaging way to convey their insights during the final exhibit.

Launch

Organize the 'Fairness Detective Quest' where students explore historical mystery scenarios in small groups. Provide each group with clues relating to past events about social justice, prompting them to debate and brainstorm changes to unjust rules. Encourage students to use magnifying glasses and detective hats to enhance the investigative atmosphere, fostering curiosity and engagement right from the project start.

Exhibition

Students will collaboratively create a mural illustrating the transformation of laws throughout history, showcasing significant changes from unjust to fair practices. Accompanying this artwork, students will perform tableaus or puppet shows to narrate pivotal social justice movements, highlighting stories they have explored during the project. This exhibition will serve as a visual and theatrical portrayal, inviting peers, teachers, and community members to engage with the students' understanding and interpretation of fairness in law.
