Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse students in the rich tapestry of Shakespeare's comedies, exploring the transformative power of disguise as a narrative tool for challenging societal norms and resolving conflicts. Through hands-on activities like mask crafting and improvisational skits, students actively engage with Shakespearean themes, fostering critical thinking and effective communication skills. By analyzing multiple interpretations and embodying characters through performance, students deepen their empathy and understanding of historical and contemporary social dynamics, culminating in a vibrant exhibition that showcases their insights and creativity.

Learning goals

Students will explore the semiotic and structural patterns of disguise in Shakespeare’s comedies to critically evaluate its role in addressing and resolving social conflicts. Through analyzing key scenes, students will develop a nuanced understanding of how Shakespeare’s use of disguise functions as a plot device to challenge norms related to gender, class, and social status. The project emphasizes effective communication, enabling students to articulate their insights through performances and reflective discussions, while honing their analytical skills by critiquing peer work for coherence and depth.

Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.7 - Analyze multiple interpretations of a story, drama, or poem (e.g., recorded or live production of a play or recorded novel or poetry), evaluating how each version interprets the source text. (Include at least one play by Shakespeare and one play by an American dramatist.)
Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Throughout the project, students will create detailed character analyses that highlight the evolution of disguise in specific Shakespearean comedies. These analyses will be developed into polished essays through ongoing peer critiques and revisions to ensure clarity and depth. As a culminating product, each student will contribute to the 'Shakespearean Disguise Gala' by crafting a mask and performing a scene, showcasing their insights and perspectives on disguise and conflict resolution within the plays. Additionally, students will produce reflective journals that document their personal growth and changing perspectives over the course of the project.

Launch

Dive into the project with "Shakespeare Behind the Masks," where students craft masks representing various forms of disguise used in Elizabethan theater, igniting creativity and curiosity about character transformations. Partner with classmates to perform short, improvised skits that explore the impact of these disguises within Shakespeare's comedies. This interactive start fosters collaboration and engagement, setting the stage for deeper analysis throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will showcase their interpretations of disguise in Shakespeare's comedies at the 'Shakespearean Disguise Gala.' Each group will perform a short scene, wearing costumes that creatively represent their analyses of gender, class, or status disguises. The audience, including peers and invited guests, will witness these theatrical transformations and engage with students in post-performance discussions. Voting will be held to recognize the most effective representations of disguise, encouraging deeper engagement and reflection on their learning experiences.
