Purpose

Students engage in a creative process that transforms a book page into musical expression over carefully structured lessons, focusing on how music amplifies storytelling and emotions. Through collaboration in shorter, focused sessions, they explore musical concepts while nurturing their communication, critical thinking, and collaboration skills. The experience culminates in a lively Musical Storytime Extravaganza, allowing students to share their compositions and reflect on their learning journey with their peers and family.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this project are to enable students to generate and organize musical ideas in various tonalities and meters within two shorter, focused sessions each week. Students will engage in collaborative critique sessions, applying feedback to refine their compositions across more frequent, concise interactions. They will explore music concepts such as dynamics and tempo, developing the ability to convey emotions effectively through their compositions. By creating and performing a unique soundscape, students will enhance storytelling, practicing effective communication by sharing their musical journey and expressive intent. Moreover, these opportunities will foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they experiment with instruments and sound techniques, responding creatively to a literary text.
Standards
  • [National Core Arts Standards] MU:Cr1.1.1.b - With limited guidance, generate musical ideas in multiple tonalities (such as major and minor) and meters (such as duple and triple).
  • [National Core Arts Standards] MU:Cr2.1.1.a - With limited guidance, demonstrate and discuss personal reasons for selecting musical ideas that represent expressive intent.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] MU:Cr2.1.1.b - With limited guidance, use iconic or standard notation and/or recording technology to document and organize personal musical ideas.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] MU:Cr3.1.1.a - With limited guidance, discuss and apply personal, peer, and teacher feedback to refine personal musical ideas.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] MU:Cr3.2.1.a - With limited guidance, convey expressive intent for a specific purpose by presenting a final version of personal musical ideas to peers or informal audience.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] MU:Re8.1.1.a - With limited guidance, demonstrate and identify expressive qualities (such as dynamics and tempo) that reflect creators’/ performers’ expressive intent.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] MU:Re9.1.1.a - With limited guidance, apply personal and expressive preferences in the evaluation of music for specific purposes.
Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.

Products

Students will create individualized soundscapes for selected book pages using classroom instruments and capture both ambient sounds and musical compositions. These soundscapes will be recorded and compiled into an audiobook experience with layered sound effects to enhance emotional storytelling. Additionally, students will maintain a 'Sound Journal' during each session to document their creative process, conceptual decisions, and emotional intentions, serving as an ongoing reflective and evaluative tool throughout the project.

Launch

Split the 'Story and Sound Adventure' into two 30-minute lessons. In the first session, introduce students to the story and guide them in identifying key emotions and events. Encourage them to brainstorm sound ideas using their voices or body percussion. In the second session, provide simple instruments and lead students in creating soundscapes that express the identified emotions, experimenting with dynamics and tempo to deepen their understanding.

Exhibition

Invite parents and family members to a 'Musical Storytime Extravaganza' spread across two half-hour sessions. Each 1st-grade student will present their composed piece alongside a reading of the selected book page, providing them with two opportunities to showcase the emotions conveyed through their music. This format ensures all students have a chance to shine and receive recognition and feedback in a supportive environment while celebrating their creativity and growth.
