Purpose

Students will investigate, “What tools lead to an effective comic-book storyboard for a 3D animation project?” Collaborative teams will address a community-relevant issue by designing an original interactive narrative that integrates visual art, dramatic elements, and production technology. They will use audience or research data to create a visualization that informs creative decisions and communicates key findings to diverse audiences. Through critique, shared decision-making, revision, presentation, and reflection, students will produce a complete storyboard that clearly communicates the narrative, interactions, and technical plan.

Learning goals

Students will investigate the essential question, “What tools lead to an effective comic book storyboard that can be used for a 3D animation project?” They will create a complete comic-style storyboard that communicates narrative structure, character action, camera choices, interactive moments, and planned theatre and animation technologies. Students will collect and visualize peer or audience feedback, then use the findings to compare creative approaches and refine their designs. Through shared decision-making, critique, presentation, and reflection, students will solve design challenges, communicate with empathy, and connect their identities and community interests to their work.

Standards
  • [Computer Science Teachers Association] S1-GMD-DD-02 - Create a storyboard to plan and communicate a game’s narrative and interactive experience.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] TH:Cr1.HS2.b - Understand and apply technology to design solutions for a drama/theatre work.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] VA:Cr1.1 - Creativity and innovative thinking are essential life skills that can be developed.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] TH:Cr1.HS3.b - Create a complete design for a drama/theatre work that incorporates all elements of technology.
  • [Computer Science Teachers Association] S1-DSC-VZ-10 - Create a data visualization that communicates key findings to diverse audiences.
Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.

Products

Students will investigate the essential question: “What tools lead to an effective comic-book storyboard for a 3D animation project?” Teams will create a concept brief, branching narrative map, visual style guide, and technology plan covering staging, camera, lighting, sound, and interactive choices. They will visualize peer-testing data to communicate key findings and guide revisions. The final product will be a polished comic-book storyboard and presentation that communicate a complete game narrative, interactive experience, and production-ready design.

Launch

Students watch a short 3D animated scene, then work in teams to sequence its mixed-up comic-style storyboard panels and justify their choices. During a gallery walk, they annotate how framing, camera angles, movement, timing, lighting, sound, and interactive choices communicate the narrative. The class creates a quick data visualization showing which tools most improved clarity for different audiences. Students then consider: “What tools lead to an effective comic book storyboard that can be used for a 3D animation project?”

Exhibition

Host a “Storyboard Showcase” where teams display their comic-style storyboards alongside animatics, 3D scene mockups, technology design plans, and a data visualization summarizing audience feedback or interaction choices. Students lead visitors through the game narrative, explain key artistic and technical decisions, and demonstrate how their tools support an effective 3D animation project. Invite peers, families, local artists, game designers, or theatre professionals to provide feedback using brief prompts about clarity, creativity, accessibility, and audience engagement. Conclude with team reflections that identify successful collaboration, revisions inspired by feedback, and next steps for production.
