Purpose

Students investigate how temperature, time, and ingredients change crystal growth by researching scientific sources, safely measuring and mixing solutions, following procedures, and collecting data over time. Teams compare crystal patterns with organism growth to recognize that crystals are nonliving while addressing the standard’s focus on growth and development. Students create a classroom crystal gallery with labeled jars, growth logs, and before-and-after journal evidence, then present evidence-based conclusions to classmates. Quick journal prompts document observations, questions, teamwork strengths, and next-session goals, culminating in a check that compares initial predictions with final conclusions.

Learning goals

Students will safely measure ingredients, mix solutions, and follow a multistep procedure to grow crystals. They will research crystal formation, collect growth data, and use evidence to explain how temperature, time, and ingredients affect crystal growth while distinguishing crystal growth from organism growth. Students will collaborate to create a classroom gallery with labeled jars, growth logs, and before-and-after journal evidence. They will communicate conclusions and reflect on observations, questions, teamwork strengths, and goals for improvement.

Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] LS.1.B - Growth and Development of Organisms
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RST.6-8.3 - Follow precisely a multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.WHST.6-8.7 - Conduct short research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question), drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions that allow for multiple avenues of exploration.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] 6-8.AF.8.1 - Critically read scientific texts adapted for classroom use to determine the central ideas and/or obtain scientific and/or technical information to describe patterns in and/or evidence about the natural and designed world(s).
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] 6-8.AF.3.4 - Collect data to produce data to serve as the basis for evidence to answer scientific questions or test design solutions under a range of conditions.
Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.

Products

Student teams will create labeled crystal-growing jars using safely measured ingredients and a clearly documented mixing procedure. They will maintain growth logs and science journals with observations, measurements, questions, teamwork strengths, and next-session goals related to temperature, time, and ingredients. Before-and-after journal entries will compare predictions, evidence, and conclusions while distinguishing nonliving crystal formation from organism growth and development. The final classroom crystal gallery will display each jar, selected journal evidence, data patterns, and a brief team explanation of findings.

Launch

Begin with a mystery gallery walk of sealed crystal samples and time-lapse images, asking teams to compare crystal formation with the growth and development of living organisms. Introduce the question, “How do temperature, time, and ingredients change crystal growth?” and have students complete the “before” journal check with predictions, observations, questions, teamwork strengths, and a next-session goal. Teams then safely measure ingredients, mix teacher-approved solutions, label jars, and record starting conditions for a shared investigation. Explain that their jars, growth logs, and before-and-after journal evidence will become a classroom crystal gallery, with final conclusions supported by observations collected over time.

Exhibition

Host a classroom crystal gallery walk for classmates and families featuring labeled jars, growth logs, and before-and-after journal evidence. Teams present how they safely measured ingredients, mixed solutions, and tracked how temperature, time, and ingredients affected crystal growth, while distinguishing crystal formation from organism growth. Visitors ask questions and leave feedback about each team’s evidence and conclusions. Students finish with a journal check comparing initial predictions, observations, and final conclusions, then reflect on teamwork strengths and a future investigation goal.
