Purpose

Students will create a claymation video that tells the story of a boxing match through clear action, tension, and emotion. They will apply stop-motion filming, clay character design, and thermodynamics concepts to help models hold their shape, with Cesar supporting camera work and Mr. Mark helping obtain supplies. Midway through production, students will review frame smoothness and clay stability, then adjust their techniques. They will demonstrate learning through the completed animation and a one-page summary or Canva presentation.

Learning goals

Students will plan and produce a claymation video that uses clear movement, pacing, tension, and character expression to tell the story of a boxing match. They will apply stop-motion filming techniques, sculpt durable clay characters, and explain how heat transfer and temperature affect the clay’s shape and stability. They will collaborate with Cesar on camera work and communicate supply needs to Mr. Mark. Midway through production, students will evaluate frame smoothness and clay durability, make revisions, and document their learning in a one-page reflection or Canva presentation.

Products

Create a storyboard and shot list that map the boxing match’s action, tension, and emotion. Build durable clay boxers, obtain supplies with Mr. Mark’s help, and produce short test clips with Cesar operating the camera. At the midpoint, create a reflection that evaluates frame smoothness, frames per second, and how temperature and handling affect the clay’s shape. Complete a polished claymation video and a one-page summary or Canva presentation documenting the stop-motion process, character construction, thermodynamics observations, and revisions.

Launch

Watch a short claymation action scene, then identify how movement, camera angles, pacing, and facial expressions create action, tension, and emotion. With Cesar operating the camera, create a 5–10-second boxing movement test while observing how hand warmth and room temperature affect the clay’s shape. Review the frames midway to check smoothness and clay stability, then record initial findings in a one-page reflection or Canva presentation. Meet with Mr. Mark to inventory needed supplies and use the test results to plan the final animated video.

Exhibition

Host a classroom premiere of the finished claymation and invite Cesar, Mr. Mark, classmates, and family members. Before the screening, briefly introduce the essential question and explain how camera techniques, clay construction, and temperature affected the animation. Display a one-page summary or Canva presentation featuring storyboard images, frame-rate tests, challenges, and revisions. Afterward, answer audience questions and collect feedback on the video’s action, tension, and emotion.
