Purpose

Students will investigate how food choices, preferences, and cultural traditions shape Spanish-speaking communities and influence community life. Using several sources and student-generated questions, they will develop food vocabulary and informative writing while practicing how to ask, answer, and explain preferences in Spanish. Collaborative teams will design and present a culturally informed Spanish menu or food presentation, using peer feedback and reflection to strengthen clear speaking, writing, and shared decision-making.

Learning goals

Students will research several sources to explain how food traditions, choices, and preferences shape Spanish-speaking communities and how food culture affects community life. They will use Spanish food vocabulary to ask and answer questions, express likes and wants, and participate thoughtfully in collaborative discussions. Students will write clear informational descriptions and collaboratively design a culturally accurate Spanish menu or food presentation. They will present their work orally, respond to audience questions, and use peer and teacher feedback to revise and reflect on their communication.

Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.WHST.6-8.7 - Conduct short research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question), drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions that allow for multiple avenues of exploration.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.7.7 - Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions for further research and investigation.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.7.1 - Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 7 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.W.7 - Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.WHST.6-8.2 - Write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, scientific procedures/experiments, or technical processes.
Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Students will create a bilingual research portfolio using several sources, including food-culture notes, a self-generated question, follow-up questions, and short explanatory writing about a Spanish-speaking community. Teams will co-design an illustrated Spanish menu or food exhibit that accurately describes dishes, ingredients, preferences, prices, and cultural traditions. Each student will participate in a live Spanish presentation and role-play, asking and answering questions about what people eat, like, and want. Students will conclude with a peer-feedback revision and individual reflection explaining how food culture and choices can shape a community.

Launch

Transform the classroom into a gallery of menus, food photos, short videos, and market advertisements from several Spanish-speaking communities. In teams, students rotate through stations, use Spanish to name foods, express preferences, ask and answer questions, and record observations about how culture and community may shape food choices. Teams choose one food tradition to investigate, generate a focused research question and related questions, and identify several credible sources to explore. End with a “menu design challenge” in which teams sketch an initial Spanish menu or food presentation, briefly pitch it to classmates, and use peer feedback to set speaking, writing, and vocabulary goals.

Exhibition

Host a “Sabores del Mundo Hispano” showcase where teams display researched Spanish-language menus, cultural food profiles, and visuals explaining how traditions and choices shape communities. Students present in Spanish, recommend dishes, explain preferences, and answer visitors’ questions using target vocabulary. Classmates, families, and invited Spanish speakers provide feedback on clarity, cultural accuracy, speaking, and writing. Each student concludes with a brief reflection describing their contribution, feedback received, and growth as a Spanish communicator.
