Learning Goals
Students will be able to orally blend phonemes in single-syllable CVC nonsense words to demonstrate that a sequence of sounds forms a complete spoken word
Students will be able to decode regularly spelled nonsense words containing short vowels, common consonants, and selected consonant blends by applying sound-symbol relationships
Students will be able to investigate changes to the first, middle, or final phoneme in CVC nonsense words to determine how one sound change creates a different word
Students will be able to document and analyze start, practice, and end reading evidence to identify patterns in decoding accuracy and smooth blending
Students will be able to communicate specific, kind sound-based feedback during paired decoding to support accurate collaborative problem solving
Students will be able to revise a nonsense-word reading after feedback and justify a next-step decoding goal using evidence of personal growth

Nonsense-Word Decoding Investigation Record and Oral Reading Comparison
Each student completes a picture-supported investigation record containing a prediction, word-building observations, start-and-end oral readings of a short teacher-selected nonsense-word list, an accuracy chart, feedback notes, and a next-step goal. The record distinguishes what the student observed from what the student thinks the evidence shows.
Mystery Word Mission Paired Oral-Reading Investigation Recording
Pairs create a recording in which each student blends and decodes CVC nonsense words, explains a sound pattern, gives kind corrective feedback, and rereads after revision. During the Mystery Word Showcase, the pair uses a simple before-and-after chart to report shared findings, differences or unexpected results, a limitation, and a new question before receiving sound-detective certificates.
