Purpose

Students will strengthen phonemic awareness and phonics by orally blending and decoding consonant-vowel-consonant nonsense words with short vowels and common consonants. They will use sound-mapping tools, word-building materials, and decoding games to test strategies and explain their thinking. Through partner practice, feedback, goal setting, and a final demonstration, students will communicate clearly, collaborate, solve decoding challenges, and reflect on their growth.

Learning goals

Students will orally segment and blend phonemes to read regularly spelled one-syllable words. They will apply short-vowel and common-consonant sounds to decode simple consonant-vowel-consonant nonsense words accurately and smoothly. Students will explain their decoding strategies, listen to peers, and collaborate to solve unfamiliar words. They will use feedback and brief self-reflections to identify successful strategies, monitor progress, and set a next-step goal.

Standards
  • [Wyoming] RF.1.2.b - Orally produce single-syllable words by blending sounds (phonemes), including consonant blends.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.1.2 - Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.1.3 - Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
  • [Wyoming] RF.1.3.b - Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.
  • [Wyoming] RF.1.2 - Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Students will create illustrated nonsense-word cards that show each CVC word, its segmented phonemes, short vowel, and a playful imagined meaning. They will maintain a decoding portfolio with brief audio recordings, teacher or peer feedback, and weekly reflections on blending strategies and progress. As a team, students will sort and revise their cards for accuracy, then design a playable “Nonsense Word Adventure” game using common consonants and short vowels. For the final product, they will teach the game to classmates or their teacher and demonstrate how to blend and decode each word aloud.

Launch

Begin with a “mystery creature message” made of picture-supported CVC nonsense words using short vowels and familiar consonants, such as “mip,” “lat,” and “zog.” Reveal one phoneme at a time as students move letter tiles together, say each sound, and blend the whole word aloud. In pairs, students build and decode a new nonsense word, listen to their partner’s blending, and offer one helpful correction or confirmation. Close by having each student share a successful strategy and choose one blending goal for the next session.

Exhibition

Host a small “Word Detective Showcase” for classmates, teachers, or family members. Each student leads a game station where guests blend phonemes and decode student-created consonant-vowel-consonant nonsense words using short vowels and common consonants. Students rotate roles as reader, sound coach, and encourager, offering kind feedback and explaining strategies such as stretching sounds and blending smoothly. Close with each student sharing a favorite challenge, evidence of growth, and a next decoding goal.
