Purpose

Students investigate how an animal’s habitat meets its needs and show that understanding through a shoebox diorama, an animal adaptation report, and a short oral explanation. The work helps them answer the question, “How can we show the connection between an animal and the place it lives?” by combining research, making, writing, and speaking. Through family support at home, peer feedback in class, and a final Critter Museum Walk, students build communication, critical thinking, self-direction, collaboration, and science understanding in an engaging, age-appropriate way.

Learning goals

Students will identify how an animal’s habitat meets its basic needs and explain how one adaptation helps that animal survive in that environment. They will create a shoebox diorama with labels using free household materials and write an animal adaptation report that answers the question, “How can we show the connection between an animal and the place it lives?” Students will strengthen communication by presenting their diorama during the Critter Museum Walk and listening to classmates’ ideas. They will also use partner feedback, parent check-ins, and self-reflection to revise their work and make clear choices about materials, labels, and explanations.

Products

Students will create an at-home shoebox diorama of an animal habitat using free household materials, with at least one clearly labeled adaptation shown in the scene. Throughout the project, they will also develop an animal adaptation report, a simple planning sketch/materials list to share with families, and a short oral explanation for the Critter Museum Walk. By the end, each student will present the completed diorama and report to explain how the animal’s habitat and adaptation work together. These products give students practice with research, communication, revision, and clear scientific thinking.

Launch

Start with a “Mystery Habitat” reveal using a few shoebox dioramas or photos of habitats, and have students notice clues about what animal might live there and what it would need to survive. Introduce the essential question, then model a simple example showing how one habitat feature connects to one animal adaptation. Students practice a quick turn-and-talk explaining that connection, then rehearse how they will describe the at-home project and due date to their families before taking home the parent note about using free household materials.

Exhibition

Host a Critter Museum Walk where students place their shoebox dioramas around the room with their animal adaptation reports beside them. Invite classmates and parents to rotate through the displays while each student gives a brief oral explanation of how the habitat meets the animal’s needs and highlights one labeled adaptation. Provide simple audience response slips or sticky notes so visitors can leave one compliment or question for each presenter. End with a short class reflection in which students share what they learned from others’ exhibits and presentations.
