Purpose

Students investigate how habitat design affects whether an animal can survive, thrive, and live in its natural groupings, then apply that science to solve a real enclosure problem. Through research, observation, and design, they use evidence about shelter, food, water, space, inherited traits, and social behavior to create a labeled blueprint and 3D habitat model for a chosen species. The work builds scientific reasoning, collaboration, and communication as students revise their ideas with feedback from peers and community experts. The learning experience culminates in a public showcase where students explain and defend how their design supports animal survival and well-being.

Learning goals

Students will explain, with evidence, how an animal habitat must provide shelter, food, water, and enough space for natural group behaviors so the species can survive and thrive. They will compare traits and behaviors within and across species to argue why some animals survive well in certain habitats while others do not, including how living in groups can improve survival. Students will design, revise, and present a labeled habitat blueprint and 3D model that uses scientific observations, partner feedback, and community expert input. They will also practice collaboration and clear communication by sharing roles, listening to questions, and defending design choices during the showcase.

Products

Students create research notes, animal-need evidence cards, and a first-draft habitat sketch as they investigate how a chosen species uses shelter, food, water, and group behavior to survive. Midway through the project, they produce a labeled habitat blueprint with scientific annotations and revise it after a partner check using animal-need cards and sticky-note gallery walk feedback. By the end, each student or team builds a small 3D model of the enclosure that clearly includes shelter, food, water, and space for natural group behaviors. They also prepare a short evidence-based presentation for the Critter Conservation Showcase to explain how their design helps the animal survive and thrive.

Launch

Start with a Habitat Detectives Quest Day where students rotate through hands-on clue stations featuring animal habitat photos, fur or feather images, diet samples, shelter examples, and group-behavior cards. In teams, they match each species to the habitat and explain which clues show how that animal gets food, water, shelter, and survives in a group. Then introduce a short video message or live visit from a zoo educator or park ranger describing a real enclosure that causes animal stress or boredom and asking students for design help. Close by revealing the challenge: create a labeled habitat blueprint and 3D model that helps one rescued or zoo animal survive, thrive, and show its natural group behaviors.

Exhibition

Host a Critter Conservation Showcase where students set up presentation stations featuring their labeled habitat blueprints and 3D enclosure models. Invite families, another 3rd grade class, the park ranger or nature center educator, and a zoo educator to listen as students give short evidence-based talks explaining how their design provides shelter, food, water, and space for group behavior. Build in a question-and-answer time so guests can ask how the habitat helps the animal survive and thrive in its specific environment. End with a gallery walk where visitors leave sticky-note feedback celebrating strong science ideas and thoughtful design choices.
