Purpose

Students investigate how precise geometric constructions can solve a real design challenge by creating and justifying circle-based designs that use an inscribed equilateral triangle, square, and regular hexagon. Over three weeks, they build skill with basic constructions, work with peers to plan and revise their designs, and use daily conversations, check-in quizzes, and peer feedback to monitor progress. The teacher and teacher aide support students as design partners and feedback guides while students prepare a polished final piece for display and sharing with families.

Learning goals

Students will construct and justify core geometric constructions with precision, including perpendicular and parallel lines, angle bisectors, and copying segments and angles, then apply those skills to inscribe an equilateral triangle, square, and regular hexagon in a circle. They will use geometric reasoning, accurate mathematical vocabulary, and visual evidence to explain why each construction works and how geometric rules support balanced, useful design. Students will collaborate to plan, test, critique, and revise a final displayed design product, using daily reflection conversations, peer review, and check-in quizzes to monitor progress and improve their work. Students will communicate their process and conclusions clearly to classmates, teachers, and families through a final exhibition and shared project images.

Products

Students will create a construction portfolio that includes practice drafts of perpendicular bisectors, angle bisectors, parallel lines, and inscribed polygons, with written justifications for each step. In teams, they will design a precise circular pattern piece such as a rose-window, tile, or courtyard medallion that inscribes an equilateral triangle, square, and regular hexagon in one cohesive layout. Throughout the unit, they will produce peer feedback notes, revision checkpoints, and brief daily reflection entries from conversations with the teacher or teacher aide. The final displayed product will be a polished construction board or digital print with labeled compass-and-straightedge steps, mathematical reasoning, and a short artist-designer statement to share in photos and newsletters.

Launch

Begin with a “Design Under Pressure” challenge: in teams, students use only a compass, straightedge, and colored paper to recreate part of a real-world circular design, such as a logo, rose window, tiled pattern, or park feature, and decide which shapes seem easiest or hardest to construct accurately. The teacher and teacher aide act as design clients, asking students to explain how they know their lines, arcs, and polygons are precise and balanced, which naturally introduces the essential question. Close with a short gallery walk and discussion where students notice patterns, name construction questions they have, and set a first team goal for what they need to learn next. This creates an immediate shared experience, surfaces prior knowledge about basic constructions, and sets up the final display of polished geometric designs.

Exhibition

Turn the room or hallway into a “Geometric Design Gallery” where teams display their final compass-and-straightedge constructions, including an inscribed equilateral triangle, square, and regular hexagon, mounted with brief written justifications of the steps and design choices. Invite the teacher and teacher aide to serve as audience members and facilitators during a short gallery walk in which students explain how accuracy, visual balance, and construction rules shaped their work. Photograph each display and student team with their finished product to share in family newsletters and with parents, and include a simple audience feedback form so students can reflect on what viewers understood and what they would revise.
