The Challenge

When flexibility, balance, and warm-up habits are inconsistent, you are more likely to struggle with efficient movement in everyday tasks and skill-based activities, which can limit performance and increase physical discomfort. This challenge is significant because modern routines often reduce regular mobility work, and poor movement preparation can contribute to reduced stability, restricted range of motion, and lower long-term physical readiness across many settings.

Challenge Question

How might we address declining mobility and inconsistent warm-up habits in a local high school athletics department so that student athletes can improve flexibility, balance, handstand control, and everyday movement through a tested stretching and stability routine?

Standards

  • [Massachusetts] 12.4.PF.4 - Demonstrate appropriate techniques to support flexibility, cardiovascular health, muscular strength and endurance, and skill-related fitness training [PE].
  • [Massachusetts] 12.2.PF.10 - Apply movement concepts and principles (e.g., force, motion, rotation) to analyze and improve the performance of self and/or others in a selected skill or lifetime physical activities (e.g., yoga, aquatics, biking, rock climbing, dancing, canoeing, weight training, golf, tennis). [PE]
  • [Massachusetts] CH.PH.02.01 - Apply movement concepts including direction, balance, level (high, low), pathway (straight, curve, zigzag), range (expansive, narrow), and force absorption (rigid, with bent knees) to extend versatility and improve physical performance
  • [Massachusetts] CH.PH.02.20 - Demonstrate exercises in strength training, cardiovascular activities, and flexibility training
  • [Massachusetts] 12.5.PF.3 - Recognize personal assets and demonstrate strategies that support growth mindset related to personal abilities to succeed, grow, and persist through physical activity challenges. [HPE; SE]
  • [Massachusetts] CH.PH.02.10 - Perform a rhythm routine that combines traveling, rolling, balancing, and weight transfer into smooth flowing sequences with intentional changes in direction, speed, and flow
  • [Massachusetts] 12.2.PF.7 - Determine a variety of physical activities that can be implemented independently or with minimal support for the purposes of personal enjoyment or challenge, or to maintain or improve fitness. [PE]
  • [Massachusetts] 12.4.PF.6 - Design strategies and tactics to elicit a higher level of performance during a variety of sports, athletic, or physical activities. [PE]
  • [Massachusetts] 12.2.PF.9 - Set a goal and create a practice plan to improve performance for a self-selected skill. [PE]
  • [Massachusetts] CH.PH.02.02 - Use a variety of manipulative (throwing, catching, striking), locomotor (walking, running, skipping, hopping, galloping, sliding, jumping, leaping), and non-locomotor (twisting, balancing, extending) skills as individuals and in teams

Competencies

  • Sustain Well-Being - Build affirming life practices (SW.2)
  • Learn with Purpose - Monitor progress and adjust (LI.2)
  • Learn with Purpose - Develop a plan to pursue a goal (LI.1)
  • Design Solutions - Identify an issue or design challenge (DS.1)
  • Reason Quantitatively - Pose and solve problems (RQ.1)

Learning Partners and Clients

Work with local high schools and colleges that want to improve athlete performance through better mobility, flexibility, and consistent warm-up habits. A local gymnastics club or cheerleading program can serve as a client by trying your routine before handstand and balance practice, then giving feedback on what improves flexibility, stability, and control. These partners give you a real performance setting to test, refine, and present a practical routine they could use before practices.

Phase Overview

Phase Key Experiences
Discover
I can launch this project by trying a short warm-up and handstand-prep routine, noticing where my balance, shoulder reach, and lower-body mobility break down, and identifying inconsistent stretching habits and limited stability work as root causes that affect both everyday movement and athletic performance.
Examine
I can record baseline data on my shoulder flexibility, hamstring and hip mobility, and handstand control so I can measure my starting point and set a realistic improvement goal. I can observe how direction, balance, level changes, weight transfer, and force absorption affect my movement in stretches, yoga flows, and handstand drills so I can analyze what helps or limits my performance. I can research and compare safe flexibility, strength, and warm-up techniques used by athletes, gymnasts, or cheerleaders so I can explain why a routine should include both mobility and stability work. I can gather feedback from a coach, classmate, or local athletics or gymnastics partner so I can understand what makes a short routine useful before practice and refine my plan with real user needs in mind. I can track my daily practice, reflect on challenges, and adjust my plan when progress is slow so I can build consistency and a growth mindset.
Engineer
I can develop a 7-week style before-practice mobility and stability routine, with a 2-week tested prototype for this project, that targets handstand control, flexibility, and everyday movement and is organized so a local athletics department or gymnastics program could use it independently.
Do
I can implement my routine during daily sessions, collect before-and-after data on handstand control, shoulder reach, and lower-body mobility, and use feedback from peers or a local sports partner to judge how well it improves movement quality, comfort, and consistency.
Share
I can share my routine, data, movement demonstration, and reflection in an interactive showcase with peers, families, school staff, and local athletics or gymnastics partners, explaining how my solution supports better performance and what I learned about my habits, persistence, and ability to grow through physical challenges.
