Purpose

Students investigate how board game mechanics shape player choices, challenge, and excitement by exploring kid-friendly BoardGameGeek pages and short media examples, then turning their research into clear mechanic posters. Across the week, they practice short research, visual communication, experimentation, and discussion as they notice patterns, ask focused questions, and test ways to represent a mechanic with words and images. The work builds collaboration, critical thinking, and self-direction through scavenger hunts, pair sketching, feedback, revision, and a closing gallery walk where students share how their thinking changed and identify one mechanic they want to keep studying. The finished poster gallery gives the class a shared reference point to carry into the next unit.

Learning goals

Students will investigate board game mechanics by conducting a short website scavenger hunt, identifying how different mechanics shape player choices, challenges, and excitement. They will create and revise a mechanic poster that includes the mechanic’s name, a visual example, and a question about how it changes gameplay, using experimentation, playful practice, and feedback from peers. Students will communicate their thinking through pair discussions, group sharing, and a final gallery walk, where they explain one mechanic they want to study more and reflect on how their thinking changed. Across the week, they will practice short research, media analysis, collaboration, and self-reflection while exploring how visual and technical elements help explain ideas to an audience.

Products

Students will create quick notes from a board-game website scavenger hunt, a first-draft mechanic poster with the mechanic’s name, a simple visual example, and one question about how it changes gameplay, and revised poster drafts based on peer feedback. The final product is a mechanic poster gallery featuring each student’s chosen board game mechanic, a labeled visual example, and a question about how it shapes choices, challenges, and excitement in play. During the closing gallery walk, each student also shares a brief spoken reflection naming one mechanic they want to study more and one way their thinking changed. The poster gallery will be displayed in the next unit as an exhibition piece students can revisit and build on.

Launch

Start with a Mechanic Mystery Lab where students rotate through a short, teacher-curated scavenger hunt on BoardGameGeek and kid-friendly board game clips to spot mechanics like rolling, matching, trading, or taking turns. In pairs, they record what they notice, choose one mechanic that makes them most curious, and sketch a quick mechanic poster with the mechanic’s name, a simple visual example, and one question about how it changes gameplay. Bring the class together in a quick circle to share discoveries and introduce the guiding question about how mechanics shape choices, challenges, and excitement in a board game. This launch builds shared background, sparks questions for short research, and sets up the poster gallery students will refine and exhibit in the next unit.

Exhibition

Display the mechanic poster gallery at the start of the next unit as a mini museum, with posters grouped by mechanic type and simple labels showing the mechanic’s name, a visual example, and the student’s question about gameplay. Invite classmates, another grade band, or school staff to visit during a short gallery walk while students stand by their posters, explain how they used BoardGameGeek to research, and share how their thinking changed. Build in a final reflection moment where each student points to one mechanic they want to study more and names one way they grew as a researcher, designer, or communicator. End with time for visitors to leave sticky-note feedback so students can make one last revision before the posters remain on display for the next unit.
