Purpose

Students use fraction operations to solve a real school-day problem by figuring out a fair snack split in teams of 4. In Snack Split Studio, they add, subtract, compare, and revise fraction and mixed-number ideas with unlike denominators while tracking each round, thumb-rating reflection, and final decision on a snack division poster. The work builds toward a real-time team challenge and a short gallery walk where students explain their reasoning, equations, and fair-share choices to classmates, teachers, and invited staff.

Learning goals

Students will add, subtract, compare, and divide fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators to make a fair-share decision for a snack or lunch item in a group of 4. They will use visual fraction models, equations, and properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions and explain their reasoning step by step. Students will revise their work after each round using thumb-rating check-ins to strengthen both mathematical accuracy and collaboration. They will present and defend their final decision during the gallery walk and class challenge using clear evidence from their poster.

Products

Teams of 4 create a snack division poster that documents each Snack Split Studio round, including visual fraction models, equations, revision notes, and thumb-rating reflections on math understanding and collaboration. As they work, they add evidence of how they used addition, subtraction, comparison, and fair-share reasoning to revise each split decision. By the end, each team produces a final poster with its chosen fair-share solution for a group of 4 and a clear step-by-step explanation ready for the Fraction Fixers Fair. Each student also contributes a brief reflection note naming one action that improved the team’s work across revision rounds.

Launch

Start with Snack Split Studio by showing one real snack or lunch item and telling teams of 4 that they must decide a fair way to split it for everyone before lunch begins. Give each team paper fraction strips or circles to model different cuts, then have them record their first idea on the snack division poster and explain how adding, subtracting, or comparing fractions helped them. After each quick round, teams pause for a thumb rating on math understanding and collaboration, name one revision move, and update their poster before trying a new split decision. Close the launch with a fast share-out of final fair-share choices and step-by-step thinking to set up the later Fraction Fixers Fair challenge.

Exhibition

End with a Fraction Fixers Fair gallery walk where each team of 4 displays its snack division poster showing each revision round, thumb-rating reflections, and the final fair-share decision. Teams take turns explaining their step-by-step fraction reasoning, including how they added, subtracted, compared, or divided fractions to solve the snack split fairly. Invite classmates, teachers, and school staff to rotate through, ask questions, and leave quick feedback on the clarity and fairness of each team’s solution. Close with a brief whole-class share-out where teams name one revision that improved their work and one math idea they will use again in the school day.
