Learning Goals
Students will be able to develop a model of photosynthesis and cellular respiration to explain carbon cycling among the biosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and geosphere.
Students will be able to explain how photosynthesis stores carbon in plant biomass and how cellular respiration releases carbon dioxide back to the atmosphere.
Students will be able to analyze evidence about temperature and rainfall effects on photosynthesis and cellular respiration in crops.
Students will be able to recommend farmer actions that reduce yield loss by using evidence about plant carbon uptake, release, and water stress.
Products
Evidence-Based Farmer Advisory Brief
Students write a concise advisory brief for local farmers explaining how hotter temperatures and changing rainfall affect photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and carbon movement in crops. The brief must use scientific evidence and propose practical actions to reduce yield loss.
Carbon Cycling Recommendation Board Presentation
Teams create and present a visual recommendation board for the regional conservation or watershed partner. The presentation shows a model of carbon cycling in plant systems and defends a set of farmer actions with evidence from local conditions.
