Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage kindergarten students in exploring and understanding the attributes of two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes through interactive, real-world activities. By connecting with a local bakery and creating a shape storybook, students will develop a deeper appreciation for how shapes are used in everyday life. This project aims to foster creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration as students classify, sort, and describe shapes in various contexts.

Learning goals

Students will identify and describe the attributes of two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, recognizing similarities and differences. They will classify and sort shapes by size and orientation, understanding how these attributes affect their perception. Through creating a storybook and participating in a virtual baking session, students will apply their knowledge of shapes in real-world contexts. They will articulate their understanding by explaining their shape choices in artwork and during the virtual exhibition.

Standards
  • [Kentucky] KY.K.G.4 - Describe the similarities, differences and attributes of two and three dimensional shapes using different sizes and orientations.
  • [Kentucky] KY.K.MD.3 - Classify and sort objects or people by attributes. Limit objects or people in each category to be less than or equal to 10.

Products

Throughout the project, students will create individual pages for a collaborative storybook, each featuring a different shape adventure with drawings and descriptions of shapes in various orientations. By the end, the class will compile these pages into a complete storybook to present at the virtual exhibition. Students will also produce artwork for the shape art gallery, demonstrating their understanding of shape attributes and orientations.

Launch

Begin with "Shape Adventure Day," where students embark on a scavenger hunt around the classroom to find hidden shapes. Provide clues that describe the shapes' attributes and orientations to guide their search. This interactive activity will spark curiosity and set the stage for exploring shapes in various contexts throughout the project.

Exhibition

Host a "Shape Safari Showcase" as a virtual gallery walk where students present their storybooks and shape-inspired artwork to family and friends. Each student can explain the attributes and orientations of the shapes they featured in their storybook pages. Encourage attendees to ask questions and provide positive feedback, fostering a supportive community environment.
