Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to help first graders explore how sounds and letters form words that convey emotions and sensory experiences. Through hands-on activities and collaborative projects, students will deepen their understanding of language while developing skills to express their feelings. This project encourages students to connect with stories and poems, enhancing their ability to identify and articulate emotional and sensory language.

Learning goals

Students will identify and construct CVC words that convey emotions and sensory experiences. They will develop the ability to articulate how specific words in stories evoke feelings and senses. Through collaborative activities, students will enhance their communication skills and deepen their understanding of the emotional impact of language.

Standards
  • [Kentucky] RL.1.4 - Identify words and phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses in order to construct meaning.
Competencies
  • Empowered Learner - Demonstrates mastery and application of academic competencies. Develops the skills and dispositions to persist through difficulties and plan for a future of self-improvement.

Products

Students will create a reflection journal documenting new CVC words and their emotional connections. They will design a poster or digital slideshow for the 'Word Fair,' showcasing CVC words and their sensory connections. Additionally, students will collaborate on a mural featuring CVC words that represent emotions, which will be displayed during the 'Word Wonderland' gallery walk.

Launch

Begin with "Sensory Storytime" in the library, where the librarian reads a story filled with sensory-rich language. After the reading, engage students in a discussion about how the words made them feel and encourage them to brainstorm their own CVC words that express emotions. This interactive session will set the stage for exploring how sounds and letters create meaningful words.

Exhibition

Host a 'Word Wonderland' gallery walk where students proudly display their reflection journals and CVC word art. Invite classmates, teachers, and family members to explore the gallery, with students acting as guides to explain their learning journey and insights. Encourage students to share how their chosen words evoke emotions and connect to sensory experiences, creating an interactive and engaging celebration of their work.
