Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage 2nd-grade students in mastering addition and subtraction within 20 through hands-on, creative projects. By designing board games and participating in community-based activities, students will develop mental math strategies and apply them in real-world contexts. This approach fosters a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts while encouraging collaboration, critical thinking, and communication skills.

Learning goals

Students will develop fluency in adding and subtracting within 20 using mental strategies. They will apply these skills creatively by designing board games and menus that incorporate math challenges. Through collaboration and community engagement, students will enhance their problem-solving abilities and reflect on their learning journey.
Standards
  • [Kentucky] KY.2.OA.2 - Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.

Products

Students will create board games that incorporate addition and subtraction challenges, complete with rules and strategies for solving math problems. They will also develop a 'Math Storyboard' to visually narrate their problem-solving journey and showcase their learning process. Additionally, students will collaborate on a 'Menu Math' project, designing menus that use addition and subtraction to price items, reflecting real-world applications of math.

Launch

Begin with a 'Math Carnival Preview' day where students explore various math games and activities related to addition and subtraction. Set up stations with simple challenges like number puzzles, interactive math stories, and quick mental math races. Encourage students to imagine how they might create their own games, sparking excitement and curiosity for the upcoming project.

Exhibition

Organize a 'Math Carnival' where students host booths showcasing their board games, inviting families and community members to engage in math challenges. Each booth can feature different themes, allowing students to explain the mental strategies they used in game design. The carnival will provide a platform for students to demonstrate their fluency in addition and subtraction within 20, while sharing their creative learning experiences.
