Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to enable students to explore and express their personal and family heritage through visual storytelling and embroidery. By integrating art and language, students will deepen their understanding of identity and cultural narratives while developing communication and collaboration skills. This project fosters a sense of belonging and connection to their heritage, encouraging students to share meaningful stories with their community.

Learning goals

Students will develop skills in visual storytelling and embroidery to express personal and family heritage. They will enhance their Spanish language proficiency by writing bilingual artist statements, integrating cultural narratives. Students will also engage in critical thinking and collaboration, co-designing projects and receiving feedback to refine their work. Through this project, they will build a deeper understanding of their identity and heritage, fostering a sense of belonging and community connection.

Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.

Products

Students will create personalized embroidered blankets or wall hangings that narrate their family heritage stories, which can be donated to local immigrant support organizations. They will also produce a bilingual artist statement in Spanish and English, detailing the inspiration and significance of their work. Additionally, students will contribute to a collaborative quilt made from individual panels, each representing a unique narrative, to be displayed at the 'Threads of Heritage Festival' and later donated to a community center.

Launch

Begin with "Heritage Kickoff Fiesta," where students bring a family artifact or story to share, setting the stage for their projects. Include traditional music, dance, and food from various cultures to create an immersive experience. This celebration will ignite excitement and provide a foundation for students to explore their heritage through the upcoming project.

Exhibition

Host a "Threads of Heritage Festival" in the school auditorium, where students display their embroidered artworks alongside bilingual artist statements. Invite families, community members, and local artists to engage in discussions about the stories behind each piece. Enhance the event with cultural performances, such as traditional music or dance, to celebrate the diverse heritages represented.
