Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse middle school students in the rich cultural heritage of Arab traditions through the hands-on creation of paper lanterns. This experience aims to build a deeper understanding of the historical significance and symbolic meanings of light in Arab celebrations, fostering collaboration and critical thinking. By co-designing and curating their own lantern creations, students will explore cultural storytelling, enhance their artistic and reflective skills, and participate in a community exhibition that celebrates cultural diversity and connection.

Learning goals

Students will explore and analyze the historical and cultural significance of paper lanterns in Arab heritage through hands-on design and crafting activities. They will enhance collaboration and communication skills by co-designing projects with peers and participating in peer-review sessions to refine their cultural storytelling methods. Throughout the project, students will deepen their understanding of the symbolism of light in Arab heritage by researching its role in cultural traditions and embedding these insights into their lantern designs. Additionally, they will develop public speaking and presentation skills as they share their lantern creations and the stories behind them during a culminating exhibition event.

Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.

Products

Craft vibrant paper lanterns using traditional and modern arab designs, incorporating rich colors and historical symbols. Collaborate to create thematic lanterns that tell personal and cultural stories reflective of arab heritage ceremonies. Develop a series of intricate, mixed-media lanterns featuring arab calligraphy, highlighting the symbolic role of light and unity in cultural narratives. Assemble a collective lantern display that illuminates the evolution of lantern design, capturing both historical and contemporary arab cultural aesthetics.

Launch

Begin the project with a 'Heritage History Walk,' where students visit a series of interactive booths set up in the classroom, each highlighting a different historical or cultural aspect of paper lanterns in Arab traditions. In small groups, students will explore the booths, engaging in hands-on activities and discussions to ignite curiosity and set the stage for deeper learning about Arab heritage. This immersive experience will help students start forming connections between the symbolism of light, Arab ceremonies, and the art of lantern-making.

Exhibition

Organize a 'Lantern Festival Evening' where students illuminate their unique paper lantern creations in a dimly lit school hall. Invite family and community members to stroll through the glowing display, encouraging them to engage with students who will share stories and cultural significance behind their designs. Enhance the experience with mood-setting music and interactive storytelling sessions, fostering a rich, communal celebration of arab heritage and artistic expression.
