Purpose

The "Food Truck Entrepreneur Challenge" provides middle school students with a hands-on, real-world opportunity to integrate academic knowledge with practical skills in a creative and collaborative way. By engaging in this project, students explore entrepreneurship, mathematics, design, and communication to build and pitch a viable food truck business model. This challenge encourages students to apply their learning to solve authentic problems, fostering critical thinking, innovation, and teamwork—all skills essential for their future academic and career endeavors.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this project are to equip students with the ability to apply mathematical concepts such as unit rates, percentages, and linear equations, and use these to solve real-world business problems. Students will also focus on developing critical thinking as they create a viable food truck business model, and enhance their collaboration and communication skills by engaging in team-based problem-solving and articulately presenting their business plans. Additionally, students will learn to utilize feedback for iterative design improvements and self-reflection, honing a self-directed learning approach that applies both in school and in broader community contexts.

Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] 6-8.AF.5.5 - Use digital tools and/or mathematical concepts and arguments to test and compare proposed solutions to an engineering design problem.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] 6-8.AF.5.4 - Apply mathematical concepts and/or processes (e.g., ratio, rate, percent, basic operations, simple algebra) to scientific and engineering questions and problems.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] 6-8.AF.5.2 - Use mathematical representations to describe and/or support scientific conclusions and design solutions.
Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Throughout the "Food Truck Entrepreneur Challenge" unit, students will collaboratively create unique food truck concepts, including developing a mission statement and designing a visually appealing logo. They will produce scale drawings of the truck's interior layout, considering functional and aesthetic aspects. Financial plans will be crafted, detailing costs of goods sold and setting realistic profit margins. Additionally, students will develop a well-structured, impactful investor pitch that showcases their understanding of their food truck business model. These creations will culminate in a final presentation, where they articulate their project's design, financial, and strategic elements to an audience.

Launch

Begin with an immersive "Ignite Your Ideas Session," where students explore various food truck concepts through interactive vision boards and collective brainstorming. Utilize design thinking exercises to foster creativity, prompting students to visualize their unique culinary themes and market niche. Guide students to refine their concepts, identifying how their food truck can address community needs, setting an engaging and purposeful tone for the project.

Exhibition

Students will host a "Food Truck Expo" event where each team sets up a booth resembling their food truck, complete with visual aids of their designs, branding, and a sample menu. Attendees, including peers, teachers, and community members, circulate to learn about each business concept while students explain their design and financial decisions. Prepare a presentation schedule, allowing groups to deliver their investor pitch to a panel of "sharks" drawn from local entrepreneurs and business professionals. Following the pitches, facilitate an open Q&A where guests can ask about the journey and challenges faced, providing students with a platform to reflect on and articulate their learning.
