The purpose of this unit is to engage kindergarten students in exploring local weather patterns through direct observation, discussion, and reflection, enabling them to make informed decisions about daily clothing choices. By collaborating with 5th-grade buddies and community partners like the local fire department, students will gain a deeper understanding of how weather affects safety and comfort. Through interactive activities, they will develop the ability to communicate their findings and demonstrate knowledge by relating weather conditions to appropriate attire. Students will actively explore how to observe and describe local weather conditions by engaging in daily weather journaling and reflection activities. Through interactions with 5th graders and community experts, they will gain an understanding of safe and appropriate clothing choices based on weather patterns. By creating and presenting weather posters, students will demonstrate their ability to articulate their observations and reasoning related to weather's impact on daily life.

By the end of the week, students will create a weather observation journal, which includes daily entries with drawings and words describing their observations of local weather and corresponding clothing choices. Additionally, students will produce a set of weather presentation posters that visually display their understanding of weather patterns matched with appropriate clothing. These posters will be presented to their 5th-grade buddies, promoting student participation in a creative and educational dialogue about weather and clothing.

Kick off the unit with an interactive weather dress-up day, where kindergarteners collaborate with their 5th-grade buddies to dress up in various weather-appropriate outfits. Set up stations with props representing sunny, rainy, snowy, and windy conditions. Each station will allow students to learn firsthand about clothing choices and weather safety while engaging in imaginative play, setting the stage for the week’s exploration of weather patterns.

At the culmination of the weather unit, kindergartners will host a Weather and Clothing Expo for their families and school community. They will display their weather journals and poster presentations, showcasing their daily weather observations and corresponding clothing choices. During the exposition, students will interact with visitors, explaining their drawing and observation process, and how their experiences with 5th-grade buddies and community partners enriched their understanding. The event will include a demonstration area where children, assisted by the local fire department representative, can discuss and present safe clothing practices during extreme weather conditions.
