Purpose

This project aims to empower 6th-grade students to explore engineering and art through the hands-on construction of cardboard puppets. Students will work collaboratively to develop puppet shows addressing community issues, refining skills in communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving. By integrating storytelling, creative design, and performance, learners will gain valuable insights into real-world applications of engineering principles while fostering empathy and engagement with their community.

Learning goals

Students will collaboratively design and construct puppets, utilizing principles of engineering and art to create a cohesive and visually engaging final product. They will develop narratives that address and provide solutions to community issues, enhancing their understanding of local matters. Throughout the project, students will cultivate skills in effective communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving by actively engaging in discussions, critiques, and revisions. This project aims to strengthen relational agency and leadership skills as students work together and reflect on their teamwork dynamics. The final puppet show will serve as a platform for students to demonstrate their applied knowledge and share their creative solutions with the community.

Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.

Products

Students will collaboratively design, construct, and animate cardboard puppets, culminating in a community-themed puppet show. They will develop and storyboard scripts addressing local issues, creatively integrating solutions that stimulate audience discussion. By the end of the project, students will produce a comprehensive narrative performance utilizing their puppets, showcasing their understanding of engineering and art principles through character design and story presentation.

Launch

Kick off the project with an interactive 'Storyboarding Session' where students work in teams to design their narratives around community issues. Provide art supplies and cardboard materials, encouraging them to sketch out their ideas and plan puppet movements. Facilitate guided discussions to help students consider structural elements and how they can enhance their stories. This team-based activity will prompt collaboration and start shaping their puppet projects, combining engineering principles with artistic flair.

Exhibition

'Puppet Palooza' will be a dynamic public event showcasing students' puppet creations through engaging performances, integrating music and storytelling elements. Students will host the exhibition in the school auditorium, inviting parents, community members, and peers to attend. They will narrate their creative processes, highlighting connections to engineering and art principles while discussing the community issues addressed in their puppet shows. This event will offer students the opportunity to demonstrate effective communication skills and reflect on the collaborative efforts they undertook during the project.
