Purpose

In this senior-level Entrepreneurship and Business Ownership project, students will collaboratively design and develop innovative business ideas inspired by futurism concepts. They will engage in hands-on experiences, acquiring knowledge of permitting, licensing, and funding, while exploring future market trends. By actively participating in a mock marketplace event, students will utilize collaboration, critical thinking, and effective communication skills to present and sell their ideas, fostering an academic mindset that connects them with their identity and community.

Learning goals

Students will actively engage in exploring Futurism concepts to innovate and develop marketable solutions for tomorrow's challenges. Through a hands-on approach, students will learn to navigate the essentials of business permitting, licensing, and funding within real-world contexts. By collaborating in teams, students will exercise shared decision-making and leadership while preparing for a future market showcase, where they will market and sell their innovative ideas.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.

Products

Throughout the project, students will design innovative business products by researching current trends and imagining future market needs. They will prototype a product or service addressing a real-world challenge and engage in the processes of obtaining necessary permits and licenses. By the end of the project, students will present their creations at a Future Market fair, effectively communicating their ideas and demonstrating how they can sell their innovative solutions in a forward-thinking marketplace.

Launch

To kick off the Senior Entrepreneurship and Business Ownership project, students will participate in a "Futuristic Marketplace Simulation." Begin with brainstorming ideas inspired by current technological trends and emerging needs within their communities. Students will create prototypes and present them in a marketplace format, simulating the buying and selling of future products. This hands-on activity engages critical thinking and problem-solving as students iterate their concepts based on peer and instructor feedback, fostering collaboration and effective communication from the outset.

Exhibition

Students will organize a Future Market Exhibition where they will present and sell their innovative ideas to peers, community members, and local business leaders. The exhibition will feature interactive booths designed by student teams, offering visuals and prototypes that showcase their concepts. Each team will also deliver a pitch highlighting their idea's potential impact and the steps they took to address real-world issues through the Futurism lens. This event will serve as a platform for students to demonstrate their critical thinking, collaborative efforts, and effective communication skills, fostering valuable connections within the community and refining their entrepreneurial mindset.
