Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to enable high school students to explore and express their identities and community connections through art, while developing essential skills such as communication, critical thinking, and collaboration. This immersive, project-based framework allows students to integrate art with other disciplines, engage with local artists, and reflect on their growth through exhibitions and feedback loops. By the end of the program, students will have cultivated a deeper understanding of how art can address and solve complex social issues, fostering community engagement and personal insight.

Learning goals

Students will recognize and analyze the influences of art on personal identity and community dynamics, cultivating empathy and critical thinking through collaborative projects. They will engage in self-directed learning by reflecting on feedback from mentors and peers, participating in mentorship sessions, and iteratively refining their work. Students will demonstrate effective communication skills by presenting and discussing their artistic creations at exhibitions and community showcases, fostering cross-cultural understanding and connections. Through hands-on projects like sculpture gardens and multimedia exhibitions, students will integrate art with real-world themes, addressing complex societal issues with innovative solutions.

Products

Students will develop a series of art pieces throughout the year, beginning with personal reflection projects that explore identity and gradually evolving into collaborative community-focused works. By the project's end, they will have created a sculpture garden inspired by marine life, merging science and art for public engagement. This will be accompanied by a dynamic multimedia art exhibition, embodying students' explorations of belonging and self, with interactive displays and live performances during the Community Arts Showcase. The final products will also include digital portfolios documenting their artistic journey, featuring analyses and reflections on socio-emotional and academic growth. Through these creations, students will foster dialogue and connectivity within the community, highlighting their understanding and expression of complex identities and social issues.

Launch

Kick off the project with a transformative "Art & Identity Exploration Day," featuring immersive guided tours of the SECT Youth Symphony Orchestra and interactive seminars with local university artists. Students will explore personal and community identities through art by participating in engaging workshops that blend music, visual arts, and storytelling. This launch day will not only spark curiosity and reflection but also set the stage for collaborative, self-directed projects that explore complex societal issues within their community.

Exhibition

Students will have the opportunity to present their work in a dynamic Community Arts Showcase, inviting family, friends, and local members to engage with their artistic achievements. Featuring a sculpture garden, live art installations, and multimedia exhibitions, students will showcase their projects that blend creativity with local marine science and history. These students will lead self-guided tours and engage in discussions with guests, providing insightful reflections on their art and the theme of identity and belonging. Through these interactions, students will gain valuable communication skills and gather diverse feedback, enhancing their critical understanding and appreciation of art's role in community connection.
