Purpose

Students will work together to dig into the past, discovering what life was like for children during the Industrial Revolution and how it led to modern-day changes in labor laws. Through hands-on activities and creative group work, they'll explore how society has evolved to ensure fair treatment and safety for workers, especially children. Using innovative presentations, students will show their ability to think critically, communicate clearly, and reflect on important social questions. As their peers contribute to their learning journey, students will use what they've learned to craft informed opinions about whether progress during that time was truly fair for everyone.

Learning goals

Students will investigate the roles children played during the Industrial Revolution and explore how these roles influenced changes in child labor laws over time. In groups, they'll create a visual timeline that shows important shifts in labor practices and attitudes. By engaging in discussions and presentations, they'll report their findings clearly, consider others' ideas, and understand diverse viewpoints. Through thoughtful critiques, they'll connect these historical changes to current issues in their communities, encouraging them to think deeply about labor rights today.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Students will create a digital timeline through a user-friendly app, showcasing significant changes in child labor laws over time, complete with interactive QR codes linking to key historical documents. As part of their textile factory model, students will craft various sections to demonstrate the production process and will role-play as child workers, letting visitors experience the real tasks performed in these factories. The 'Time Traveler's Fair' will feature booths with handmade props and interactive presentations, guiding visitors through the evolution of labor practices, while visuals and demonstrations illustrate their understanding of the topic.

Launch

To kick off the project, set up a fun factory simulation in the classroom where students take on different roles common during the Industrial Revolution like machine operator or coal miner. Decorate the room with props that reflect the era, and introduce some challenges that mimic what those jobs would be like, such as time limits or equipment failure. Afterward, have a group discussion where students share what they learned and how they felt about their assigned tasks. This engaging start sets the stage for understanding the historical context and development of child labor laws.

Exhibition

Students will create an engaging exhibition that presents their findings on the role of children in workforce history. Each group will use interactive multimedia displays like digital timelines and role-play activities at their booths, inviting friends and family to learn through games and discussions. The event will include a joint reflection time where students share what they discovered and highlight their personal learning experiences.
