Purpose

Students will engage in a hands-on project to explore the hierarchical levels of biological organization using a creative biosphere pizza model. This immersive experience encourages students to analyze and represent the connections between organisms, populations, ecosystems, and the biosphere, fostering a deeper understanding of ecological interdependence. Through collaborative creation, critique, and presentation processes, students will develop critical-thinking skills and communicate their newfound insights on the complex dynamics of ecosystems.

Learning goals

Students will explore the interconnectedness of organisms within ecosystems by constructing a visual representation of levels of biological organization using the hands-on "biosphere pizza" model. They will investigate how individual organisms contribute to their populations, communities, and overall biosphere, addressing the essential question of how these levels influence survival and interaction. By participating in peer critiques, students will refine their understanding and presentations, demonstrating their grasp of ecosystem dynamics through detailed class exhibitions.

Products

Throughout this project, students will individually create a detailed visual representation on triangle-shaped cardboard slices illustrating the levels of biological organization, from the organism to the biosphere. As a class, students will showcase their completed pizza slices in the final presentation, including explanations of how each level interacts and contributes to the ecosystem. The presentation will involve students explaining their drawings and discussing the essential question, demonstrating their understanding of ecosystem dynamics.

Launch

Begin the project by inviting students to visualize a slice of pizza as a microcosm of life's complexity. Start with each student selecting an organism they are interested in and researching its role in the ecosystem. Using their chosen organism, students will create their pizza slice models by sketching representations of the organism, population, and broader biosphere on their slices. As they share their initial thoughts in a class discussion, students will explore how these different levels of organization impact the organism's survival and interactions with its habitat. This hands-on activity sets the stage for deeper exploration throughout the week.

Exhibition

On the final day, students will present their biosphere pizzas to the class in a collaborative exhibition. This allows students to visually and verbally communicate their understanding of biological organization and ecosystem interactions. Encourage students to explain their design choices, highlighting the connections between organism, population, ecosystem, and biosphere. Make the exhibition interactive by facilitating questions from peers to deepen comprehension and provoke further discussion.
