Purpose

This project enables students to take an active role in shaping their communities by engaging directly with local neighborhood councils to understand existing challenges and conceive thoughtful improvements. Through experiential learning and collaboration, students will deepen their understanding of civic engagement, urban planning, and community dynamics while honing essential skills like critical thinking, communication, and leadership. By creating tangible neighborhood improvement plans, students connect their academic learnings to real-world impact, instilling a lasting sense of responsibility and belonging within their neighborhoods.

Learning goals

Students will engage in a comprehensive exploration of their neighborhoods, developing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills to propose impactful changes. Through collaboration with peers and community partners, they will exercise shared decision-making, leadership, and effective communication. The experience will foster self-directed learning, as students monitor their progress and reflect on their experiences while building a deep understanding of urban planning concepts. By the end of the project, students will have established an enhanced sense of place and identity within their community, achieving the ability to present and refine their ideas based on real-world feedback.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.

Products

Students will create a detailed neighborhood improvement plan booklet that features sketches, architectural models, and infographics to vividly illustrate their proposed changes and their potential impact on the community. This booklet will also incorporate findings and insights gathered through data collection, interviews, and collaboration with community partners. By the end of the project, students will be equipped to present a comprehensive and visually engaging showcase of their strategic proposals to improve the quality of life in their neighborhood.

Launch

Kick off the experience with a 'Neighborhood Treasure Hunt' where students embark on a dynamic exploration of their communities, undertaking challenges that require them to gather stories, experiences, and artifacts. This fully immersive start will enable students to experience the unique character of their neighborhood, sparking curiosity and laying the groundwork for meaningful connections. Through this activity, students will gain a deeper understanding of their locale’s assets and challenges, setting a strong foundation for the project ahead.

Exhibition

Students will host a "Neighborhood Exposé" at a local community center, transforming the space into an interactive gallery showcasing their neighborhood improvement plans. They will conduct guided tours for local council members, community stakeholders, and families, presenting their architectural models, sketches, and infographics in an engaging manner. The event will also feature opportunities for students to discuss their learning journeys and receive direct feedback from attendees, with emphasis on how their proposals can impact the community's quality of life.
